If you're sad that Allegiant, the third Divergent movie, is the last movie in the Divergent Series, think again. The series, based off the trilogy of books by young adult author Veronica Roth, is actually going to have four films. Yep, you heard that right: Allegiant might not be called Allegiant Part 1, but that's essentially what it is. Over two years ago, it was announced that the final Divergent book would be split into two films, similar to what Lionsgate did with Mockingjay, the final installment of The Hunger Games series. With Allegiant to be released on March 18, fans are wondering, when is the next Divergent movie coming out?

Ascendant, the final Divergent Series film, is currently scheduled for release on June 9, 2017. Though the film's release date was originally announced for March 24, 2017, only one year after the release of Allegiant, the final film was pushed back. It's unclear what, exactly, caused the scheduling change. It could be simple studio politics, but it might also have something to do with the fact that Robert Schwentke, the director behind Insurgent and Allegiant, stepped down from directing the fourth film. Age of Adaline director Lee Toland Krieger is reportedly in talks to replace Schwentke as director, and Ascendant is set to start filming in the summer of 2016.

A change in director isn't the only shakeup for the Divergent series, though. Although the final two Divergent films were originally announced as Allegiant Parts 1 & 2, reflecting the title of the final book upon which it is based, the title of the second film was later changed to Ascendant. According to the initial report by MTV, both films will still be based on the original Allegiant text, but that with the second film, filmmakers plan on elaborating on the original story. This could mean a number of different things. Perhaps filmmakers have decided to change the ending of Allegiant, which was extremely polarizing for fans of the books. (I won't spoil it here.) Or maybe filmmakers want to set up a possible spinoff series — Roth herself penned a spinoff book titled Four: A Divergent Collection, a sort of retelling of the series from Four's perspective.

When they announced the change in September, filmmakers revealed new poster art for both Allegiant and Ascendant. The tag line for Ascendant reads — 'The End Is Never What You Expect' — could signify a possible divergence from the source material. (Sorry, I couldn't help myself.) Whatever it means, fans are going to have to wait until Ascendant's release in June 2017 to find out.

The future of the Divergent film series remains uncertain. In February, director Robert Schwentke from the franchise after helming The Divergent Series: Insurgent and The Divergent Series: Allegiant. A month later, Allegiant hit theaters and was a box office bomb, grossing half of what the previous film had made at the domestic box office. Unlike other YA movie franchise like The Hunger Games and Harry Potter, which remained strong until the end, Divergent was out of breath on its second-to-last film. And that’s when things got really weird: Lionsgate announced that Ascendant, the fourth and final film in the series, that would act as the backdoor pilot for a new television series set in the Divergent universe. However, it seems that nobody told franchise star Shailene Woodley, and she’s now made it pretty clear that she’s not interested in starring in the made-for-TV finale. Woodley has been making the press rounds for Snowden (where she plays Lindsay Mills, the girlfriend of the infamous NSA whistleblower) and she was pretty upfront about her feelings on Divergent‘s move to television in an interview with:I didn’t sign up to be in a television show. Out of respect to the studio and everyone in involved, they may have changed their mind and may be doing something different, but I’m not necessarily interested in doing a television show.Frankly, this whole situation is ugly.

For Lionsgate, it’s ugly because they had to watch a successful film franchise implode before their very eyes and now they have to sort through the rubble and figure out what to do next now that the audiences have spoken. The actors themselves are caught between a rock and a hard place – do you finish things up or do you say thanks-but-no-thanks to the downgrade? One lingering question is whether or not the cast, who were signed on for multiple films, could be roped into the television finale. Co-star Miles Teller discussed this with last month:When we all signed on for the first one we had every intention of finishing it theatrically. We signed on for x amount of movies and you take that all into consideration.

We wanted to see that storyline finish. You know, it’s moving into a different format. So who knows?Teller also revealed that he and other members of the cast were only told about these plans minutes before they were revealed in the press, so yeah, they have every reason to be deeply unhappy about this. Woodley, who has consistently been the best part of the Divergent movies, shouldn’t have to learn about the future of her flagship character from the internet.
